SCOTLAND

Scotland is one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. Scotland was once an independent country, but is now in a union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which is called the United Kingdom and occupies the northern third of Great Britain. Scotland's mainland shares a border with England to the south. It is home to almost 800 small islands, including the northern isles of Shetland and Orkney, the Hebrides, Arran and Skye.

LANGUAGE
The main language spoken in Scotland is English, while Scots and Scottish Gaelic are minority languages. The dialect of English spoken in Scotland is referred to as Scottish English.

RELIGION
Christianity is the largest religion in Scotland. Most Christians belong to the Church of England or the Church of Scotland. These are Protestant Churches. There are also many Roman Catholics.

CURRENCY
The currency of Scotland is the GBP Pound (£). One pound is comprised of 100 pence and coins can be obtained in 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 denominations. Bank notes are commonly divided into £5, £10, £20 and £50 amounts.


FOOD
In Scotland, rice was a luxury food. It was imported from southern Europe. In Scotland, the general diet largely consisted of game, some domesticated meat, oatcakes (made from oats and barley), seafood and seaweed.

The major airports in the city include the Aberdeen International Airport, Edinburgh Airport, Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, Inverness Airport and Dundee Airport.

Edinburgh is the capital city and second largest city in Scotland. Edinburgh lies on the east coast, where the River Forth flows into the sea. The central part is Edinburgh Castle, at the top of a steep hill. At the same time there is the Edinburgh Fringe.

GLASGOW
